6 Tips to Prevent Plumbing Problems

One of the most important systems in a house is plumbing. Most of the time, homeowners call plumbers for help when they have plumbing problems.

However, there are several preventive measures you can take to prevent plumbing problems before they happen. Apart from saving you money, this can save you time and resources.

Use Plumbing Cleaners Carefully

Did you know that most of the plumbing cleaners you use, especially the DIY ones, can damage your plumbing systems? This is one of the reasons most homeowners are now looking for gentle plumbing cleaners.

Even though these cleaners help prevent damage to your plumbing systems, you should be careful to avoid overusing them. This is because using them too often can lead to the wearing down of the walls of your plumbing systems.

These cleaners are supposed to remove materials stuck in your plumbing systems. If, for instance, you do not have any debris or dirt to remove, the cleaners will work on the systems themselves. They might end up destroying your plumbing systems. Use plumbing cleaners carefully to prevent plumbing problems.

Fix Minor Problems Immediately

One of the easiest ways of preventing major plumbing problems is to ensure that minor issues are fixed immediately after they occur. Minor issues, such as small leaks, can lead to major plumbing problems that can frustrate you.

You can always get a plumbing emergency response whenever you notice these minor issues. Even though some of them are easy to fix, others might require professionals to ensure that they are fixed well and to avoid reoccurrence.

It is important to note that plumbing systems in your home are connected. If you leave a minor problem unattended in one part of your home, chances are that you might get an even bigger plumbing problem in another part of your house. You need to avoid this as much as you can.

Avoid Grease On Your Drain

Have you ever experienced a clogged drain? Grease is one of the leading causes of these clogs. Most people assume that grease will wash away once it is poured into their drains. However, it sticks to the walls of your pipes.

In addition, it adds a coating to the pipes. This makes them bumpy and sticky. These bumps are very dangerous since they catch food particles and slow down the flow of water. Over some time, you will have a clogged drain.

If you want to dispose of grease, find a better way. For instance, collect it using old jars and then dispose of the jars somewhere else. You can also check with the relevant authorities to find the right places to get rid of grease.

Avoid Flushing Wipes

Whether flushable wipes or not, you need to ensure that you are not flushing wipes in your home. This is because they can lead to a major plumbing problem that might require professional plumbers to be fixed.

If you have ever used flushable wipes, you know that submerging them in water breaks them down. This process is supposed to happen in the sewer. However, the process takes a lot of time. Continued flushing of wipes will lead to the clogging of your septic tank.

A septic tank clog is a plumbing problem you do not want to experience. This is because it causes the growth of bacteria that can damage your pipes and the septic tank. This requires a professional plumber to be fixed. In extreme cases, you might have to replace the septic tank.

Clear Your Drains Frequently

Pipe and drain clogging is one of the most common plumbing problems for homeowners. This happens because they rarely clear their drains of debris and other forms of dirt. To prevent plumbing problems, ensure that you clear your drains frequently.

This will help you to stop issues with the flow of water. It also helps avoid the formation of large clots. Things such as hair can lead to major problems if not removed from your drains. They can form major clots that prevent the flow of water.

Fortunately, this is a problem you can avoid on your own without the help of professional plumbers. All you need to do is to create a cleaning routine and clear your drains frequently. Maintaining your plumbing systems is one way of adding value to your property.

Be Careful With Toilet Fresheners

Almost every homeowner uses a toilet freshener. However, they are not all good. Some of them, especially freshener tablets, might lead to plumbing problems. These fresheners smell nice and change the color of your toilet water.

However, it is important to note that they have chemicals that damage components of your toilet. One common component that is mostly affected by these chemicals is the flush valve.

In addition, you might have pieces from the tablets getting stuck in different parts of your toilet. This can lead to a breakdown of your toilet. To be on the safe side, ensure that you are not flushing anything else apart from toilet paper on your toilet.
